Container Gardening

My CA Wonder Pepper

If you think you can't have home grown veggies and herbs just because you don't have a backyard, you're wrong! Container gardening is a popular gardening method for those who have limited space. Be as creative as you wish with your containers. They can be anything from an old boot, to a nice ceramic pot, to a milk jug!

Filling your containers with good quality, well draining soil is important, as well as using the adequate size container for each vegetable or herb. While your herbs can do great in a small container like a coffee can, you don't want to be planting your broccoli in one! Also, be sure that there are draining holes in the bottoms of your containers.

Here is a list of some vegetables that are great for container gardening

Small to Medium Containers (1-3 gallons):
Herbs
Carrots (smaller varieties like Little Fingers, Thumbelina or Tonda Di Parigi work well)
Beets
Radishes
garlic
Lettuce
Spinach
* With these veggies, the bigger the container, the more you can fit!

Large Containers (5 gallons and up):
Broccoli
Tomatoes
Peppers
Peas  (Dwarf varieties are great)
Beans (Bush varieties are great)
Squash
Cucumbers
Cabbage
*Because these plants can get quite large, growing only 1-2 plants in each container is recommended
