Cool Weather Veggies

Now that winter is just around the corner, you want to start thinking about what you're going to plant. Not all vegetables do well in cooler climates, so you want to make sure you are planting crops that can withstand the harsh winter weather.

You want to make sure you know which Climate Zone, or Hardiness Zone, you fall under. Once you know this, you can begin to research which cool weather veggies you can plant, and when. What you can plant now in Northern California, may not be good to plant right now in Montana or New York. Here's a good link to find out your Climate Zone http://www.backyardgardener.com/zone/index.html

Once you know your Climate Zone, this is a great website for a rough estimate of planting schedules according to zones. http://www.thevegetablegarden.info/planting-schedules

To start, here is a list of some good cool weather vegetables:
  • Spinach
  • Cabbage
  • Lettuces
  • Cauliflower
  • Broccoli
  • Pease
  • Beets
  • Brussells Sprouts
  • Kale
This is just a starting point. I will discuss each vegetable in detail as we go along, and we will learn more about when you want to start planting each, depending on your Climate Zone.
